Cooler Not Cooling? Here's What's Actually Going Wrong
Few things are as frustrating as a cooler that's running — fan spinning, sound on, everything seemingly normal — but just not putting out cool air the way it used to. This is one of the most common complaints we hear in Jodhpur, especially as summer temperatures climb, and thankfully, it usually comes down to a fairly small set of identifiable causes.
Start With the Cooling Pads
In the majority of cases, weak or absent cooling comes down to the cooling pads (sometimes called cooling honeycomb pads). These pads are what actually cool the air as it passes through them, and they rely on being consistently wet to do their job. Over time, they collect mineral deposits from water, dust, and general wear, all of which reduce how effectively they can absorb and evaporate water. When pads are old, clogged, or dried out in patches, cooling effectiveness drops noticeably, even though everything else about the cooler seems to be working fine.
Cooling pads are a wear item, not a permanent part — they typically need replacing every season or two depending on water quality and usage, and this alone resolves a large share of "not cooling" complaints.
Check Water Flow to the Pads
Even good cooling pads won't work if water isn't reaching them properly. This points back to the water pump — if it's underperforming or has failed, the pads may be dry or only partially wet, which directly reduces cooling output. A pump that's making noise, running weakly, or not running at all is a strong indicator that this is the underlying issue rather than the pads themselves.
Low Water Levels
This sounds almost too obvious to mention, but it's a genuinely common cause, especially with coolers that don't have an easily visible water level indicator. If the tank runs low or empty during operation, the pump can't circulate enough water to keep the pads properly saturated, and cooling drops off even though the cooler otherwise seems to be functioning normally.
Poor Ventilation or Airflow Around the Cooler
Coolers work by pulling in outside air and cooling it as it passes through wet pads — which means they need a source of fresh, ideally somewhat dry outside air to work effectively. A cooler placed in a poorly ventilated space, or one that's mostly recirculating already-humid indoor air, will feel noticeably less effective, even in perfect mechanical condition. This is more of a placement issue than a repair issue, but it's worth ruling out before assuming something's broken.
High Humidity Conditions
This is less about the cooler itself and more about how evaporative cooling works in general — it's simply less effective on humid days, since the process relies on evaporation, which slows down as air humidity increases. This is a real limitation of the technology itself and applies to even a perfectly functioning cooler during Jodhpur's occasional humid stretches, particularly around monsoon season.
Motor or Fan Speed Issues
If the fan inside the cooler is spinning slower than it should, less air moves through the wet pads per minute, which reduces the overall cooling effect even if the pads themselves are in good condition. This can point back to a capacitor or motor issue similar to what affects ceiling fans, and it's worth having checked if reduced fan speed is part of what you're noticing.
A Simple Way to Narrow It Down
If you're trying to figure out the cause before calling someone, it helps to check a few things directly: are the pads visibly wet and clean, or dry and discolored? Is water actually flowing over them when the cooler's running? Is the water tank adequately filled? Answering these narrows down whether the issue is likely pads, pump, water level, or something else before an electrician even arrives.
