Reduced Water Pressure or Flow
A gradual decline in pressure, rather than a sudden failure, often points to a partially clogged filter or foot valve, wear on the impeller reducing its efficiency, or in some cases, an underlying voltage issue affecting motor performance. This tends to develop over time rather than appearing suddenly, which is part of why it's easy to not notice until the difference becomes fairly significant.
Unusual Noise
Noise can stem from several different causes: bearing wear (grinding or rattling), impeller issues (high-pitched whining), water hammer or trapped air (banging or knocking), or the pump running dry (a distinctly strained sound). Overheating
Pump motors can overheat from running dry, from an obstruction forcing the motor to work harder than normal, or from an underlying electrical fault causing excessive current draw. Overheating that continues without being addressed accelerates wear on the motor winding and can eventually lead to more serious failure.

If a pump repeatedly trips its circuit breaker, this is often the overload protection doing its job in response to an underlying issue — commonly a jam, an electrical fault, or the motor drawing more current than it should due to strain. Simply resetting the breaker repeatedly without investigating the cause tends to lead to the same problem recurring.
Leaks
Leaks around pipe connections or the pump body itself are usually caused by worn seals, loose fittings, or general wear over time. While often a simpler mechanical fix, leaks are worth addressing promptly, since they can waste water and, if near electrical components, introduce a safety concern.
Motor Winding Damage
This is a more significant issue, usually developing from prolonged overheating, voltage fluctuations, or simple age combined with heavy use. It typically requires motor rewinding, which restores function at a considerably lower cost than replacing the entire pump.
Vibration and Mounting Issues
Excessive vibration during operation, if not caused by a mechanical fault, often points to unstable or uneven mounting rather than an internal pump problem. This is worth ruling out before assuming a more involved repair is needed.
Corrosion and Age-Related Wear
Older pumps, particularly those exposed to moisture or used in less-than-ideal conditions over years, can develop corrosion affecting various components. This tends to show up as a combination of reduced performance, occasional leaks, and eventually more frequent breakdowns as multiple parts degrade together.
